The Hercules Collection of Cameos and Intaglios, featuring gems dating from antiquity to the 19th century, will be offered as part of Bonhams’ next jewellery sale on 23 September in London. The collection – which is made up of more than 90 gems including cameos and intaglios from ancient Egypt, ancient Rome, and the Sasasian Empire – comes from a UK private collection formed during the mid-20th century. All gems are mounted as rings and will be offered without reserve.
UK Jewellery Director, Emily Barber commented: “This wonderful collection demonstrates the consummate skill of the gem carver. To build these remarkable 3D representations, the carvers needed to utilise the different layers in the gem or hardstone for colour and depth. It is a fascinating and extremely skilful art form, and this collection has particularly wonderful examples. Collecting cameo and intaglios has great appeal and to own a gem that might have been worn by an ancient Roman or a neo-classical humanist is a seductive prospect.”
